“Anytime You Need a Friend ” is a song by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey. The song was written and produced by Carey and Walter Afanasieff, for her third studio album, Music Box (1993). It was released on May 31, 1994 through Columbia Records, as the fourth and final single from the album. The song draws influence from pop, R&B and gospel music genres. While the album focused heavily on pop oriented and radio friendly material, “Anytime You Need a Friend” deviated from the formula, finishing as the only gospel-infused song on Music Box. Lyrically, the song’s protagonist tells her love interest that anytime he may need a friend, she will be there unconditionally for him.

Throughout the song’s bridge and climax, critics noted the lyrics altering from those of a friend, to those of a lover. The song was well received by contemporary music critics, many of which praised Carey’s large spanning vocal range, as well as its gospel influence that they felt was missing on most of Music Box. Aside from its critical acceptance, the song achieved strong worldwide chart positions and peaked at number twelve on the US Billboard Hot 100, but became her first single to miss out the top-ten. Additionally, it peaked at number five in Canada and topped the singles charts in Finland and the Netherlands. The song attained a top-twenty peak position in Australia, France, Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.Carey performed “Anytime You Need a Friend” live on several televised talk and award shows around the world, including the Late Show with David Letterman, the British music chart program Top of the Pops and German entertainment show Wetten, dass..?. Additionally, the song served as a closing number on Carey’s Music Box and Daydream World Tours, and was featured on her compilation albums, Greatest Hits (2001) and The Ballads (2008). Although several remixes were commissioned for the song, the C+C remix became the most notable, being produced by C+C Music Factory ‘s David Cole and Robert Clivilles, and the first of Carey’s remixes to feature her on production credits. The song’s music video was filmed by Danielle Federici, in New York during the summer of 1994. The video was filmed in black-and-white fashion, and features Carey’s first image makeover, where she appears with a straightened hairstyle for the first time in her career. Additionally, the music video showcases scenes of Carey singing by a large church choir in a foyer, as well as several people, ranging from a small child to an elderly man, who are alone and depressed. As the video progresses, the child and man are befriended after brief interludes and prayers to God. The song’s C+C remix also features its own music video, displaying behind the scenes footage of Carey and her staff enjoying themselves during the original video’s filming.

“O Holy Night” (“Cantique de Noel”) is a well-known Christmas carol composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to the French poem “Minuit, chretiens” (Midnight, Christians) by a wine merchant and poet, Placide Cappeau (1808_1877).

In Roquemaure at the end of the year 1843, the church organ was recently renovated. To celebrate the event, the parish priest asked Cappeau, native from this town, to write a Christmas poem. Cappeau did it, although being a professed anticlerical and atheist.

Soon after, Adam wrote the music. The song was premiered in Roquemaure in 1847 by the opera singer Emily Laurey.

Unitarian minister John Sullivan Dwight, editor of Dwight’s Journal of Music, created a singing edition based on Cappeau’s French text in 1855. In both the French original and in the two familiar English versions of the carol, the text reflects on the birth of Jesus and of humanity’s redemption.

The song was performed throughout the Daydream World Tour and the performance at the Tokyo Dome was later included on a rare DVD titled “Mariah Carey Live In Japan”.

Butterfly is the sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey, released on September 16, 1997, by Columbia Records. The album contained both hip-hop and R&B sounds, as well as some softer and more contemporary melodies. Throughout the project, Carey worked with Walter Afanasieff, with whom she had written and produced most of the material from her previous albums. She also worked with many famed hip-hop producers and rappers, such as Sean “Puffy” Combs, Kamaal Fareed, Missy Elliott and the Trackmasters. With the latter acts producing most of the album, Butterfly deviated from the contemporary sound of Carey’s older work, and was hailed as a defining album of the 1990s and of pop and R&B music. With Butterfly, Carey continued the transition that began with previous album, Daydream (1995), which pushed her further into the R&B and hip-hop market. The record pushed her music into an R&B sound, leading her away from the contemporary-pop background of her previous work. During her marriage to Tommy Mottola, Carey had little control over the creative and artistic steps she took on her albums, however, after their divorce mid-way through the album’s conception, Carey was able to reflect her creative maturity and evolution into the album’s writing and recording. Carey wrote in the booklet of her twelfth studio album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, that she considers Butterfly her magnum opus and a turning point in both her life and career.Upon release, Butterfly garnered generally positive reviews from contemporary music critics, many of whom embraced Carey’s musical transition. Reviewers complimented the album for its mature sound and production, and commended Carey’s musical direction, calling the work a “transitional album, one that makes her a rarity of the 90s.” Though released during Carey’s heavily publicized conflict with Sony Music, the album became a commercial success, topping the albums chart in Australia, Canada, Japan and the Netherlands. On the Billboard 200, it debuted at number one, spending one week atop the chart. It was certified five-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and received the Million Award in Japan.Five singles were released from the album, two worldwide commercial releases, and three limited promotional singles. ” Honey,” the record’s lead single, topped the charts in the US and Canada, and reached the top-five in New Zealand, Spain and the United Kingdom. The album’s fifth single, ” My All,” became a top-ten hit throughout Europe. When “My All” topped the chart in the US, it became her thirteenth number-one single, surpassing Madonna as the female with the most chart toppers on the Hot 100. To promote Butterfly, Carey embarked on the Butterfly World Tour, which visited Australia, Japan and Taiwan, with one show in the United States. Butterfly was nominated for three Grammy Awards at the 40th annual ceremony, however not winning any of the nominations.

I’ve Been Thinking About You (Mariah Carey)

Music Box is the third studio album by American recording artist Mariah Carey. It was released by Columbia Records on August 31, 1993, in North America. The album comprises ballads primarily co-written by Carey and Walter Afanasieff, with whom she had previously worked on Emotions (1991), and a few urban dance tracks. During the course of the album’s development, Carey wanted to broaden her audience, choosing a more pop-oriented sound. During this time frame, they experimented with different organs and other musical instruments, leading the album’s sound away from her more contemporary previous efforts. Two unused tracks from the album sessions were released as B-sides: “Do You Think of Me” and “Everything Fades Away”.In order to successfully take the album in a new direction, Carey and Afanasieff sought out new and innovative producers, as well as some from Carey’s previous releases. Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds first began working with Carey on Music Box, where he helped produce some of the album’s softer and more melodious tracks, as well as being part of the songwriting process. Additional writers and producers were Robert Clivilles and David Cole (a pair also known as C+C Music Factory) and Daryl Simmons. While the album featured a range of different talented music producers, the bulk of the songwriting was done by Carey and her writing partner, Walter Afanasieff. In future projects, they would continue writing material for Carey’s albums, until her 1999 release Rainbow, where he is absent from the writing credits.Four singles were released from the album. The first three, ” Dreamlover “, ” Hero ” and ” Without You “, became worldwide chart-topping singles, the latter becoming Carey’s highest charting international single of her career. “Without You” became Carey’s first number-one single in most European markets and reached the top three in the United States. To promote Music Box, Carey embarked on the short but successful Music Box Tour which traveled to select cities in North America. Carey was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Dreamlover” at the 1994 Grammy Awards and received the same nomination for ” Hero ” at the 1995 Grammy Awards, although she did not win either time. After its release, Music Box received generally mixed reviews from music critics. The album faced criticism regarding Carey’s more mellow and lazy tone in comparison to her previous work. Despite some unfavorable reviews, the album became a commercial success, topping the Billboard 200 and becoming Carey’s first number-one album in Australia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified it diamond, for shipments of ten million copies across the United States. Music Box remains Carey’s highest seller and one of the best-selling albums of all time, with worldwide sales of over 32 million copies.

Music Box spent prolonged periods at number one on the album charts of several countries, and eventually became one of the best-selling albums of all time, with worldwide sales of over 32 million copies. After declining to tour for her past two albums, Carey agreed to embark on a short stateside string of concerts, titled the Music Box Tour. Spanning only six dates across North America, the short but successful tour was a large step for Carey, who dreaded the hassle of touring. Following Music Box, Carey took a relatively large period of time away from the public eye, and began working on an unknown project throughout 1994. The project was kept very secretive until Billboard announced on their October issue that Carey would release a holiday album later that year. In late 1994, Carey recorded a duet with Luther Vandross; a cover of Lionel Richie and Diana Ross’s “Endless Love”. By that point, Columbia felt Carey had already established herself as a pop singer, and vocalist, but wanted to try and feature her as more of an entertainer. Through the release of Merry Christmas, Columbia hoped that audiences would buy Carey’s material solely for her name and reputation, and squash fears of her being a typical pop singer. The album was released on November 1, 1994, on the same day that the album’s first single, “All I Want for Christmas Is You”, was released. The album eventually became the best-selling Christmas album of all time, with global sales reaching over 15 million copies. Additionally, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” was critically lauded, and is considered “one of the few worthy modern additions to the holiday canon.” Rolling Stone described it as a “holiday standard”, and ranked it fourth on its Greatest Rock and Roll Christmas Songs list. Commercially, it became the best-selling holiday ringtone of all time, and the best-selling single by a non-Asian artist in Japan, selling over 2.1 million units (both ringtone and digital download). By the end of the holiday season of 1994, Carey and Afanasieff had already begun writing material for her next studio album, which would be released in the fall of the following year.

Carey began recording her second studio album, eventually titled Emotions, in 1991. The album, as Carey described it, paid homage to Motown soul music, as she felt the need to pay tribute to the type of music and genre that truly influenced her as a struggling child. For the project, Carey worked with Walter Afanasieff, who only had a small role on her debut, as well as Clivilles and Cole, from the dance group C+C Music Factory. However, Carey’s relationship with Margulies deteriorated over a contract Carey had signed prior to her signing with Columbia, agreeing to split not only the songwriting royalties from the songs, but half of her earnings as well. However, when the time came to write music for Emotions, Sony officials made it clear he would only be paid the fair amount given to co-writers on an album. Subsequently, Margulies filed a lawsuit against Sony which ultimately led to their parting of ways. On September 17, 1991, Emotions was released around the world, and was accepted by critics as a more mature album than its predecessor. While praised for Carey’s improved songwriting, production and new sound, the album was criticized for its material, which many felt was noticeably weaker than her debut. Though the album managed sales of over eight million copies globally, Emotions failed to reach the commercial and critical heights of its predecessor.
